Personalize Steppr

Engine Preferences

Changes apply immediately and stay on this device.

Appearance & Display

Customize the reading surface, typography, retro visual feel, and e-ink behavior. Existing theme preferences remain compatible.

Theme & Palette

Typography & Text Ergonomics

These preferences layer over the existing theme and apply to the paragraph reader and ORP reticle.

Analog / Retro visual feel

Retro palettes remain optional and do not change the synchronized reader stream.

Audio unavailable

Classic Steppr — your chosen theme, untouched.

Default

E-Ink device mode

No refresh limiter — playback repaints at the cadence pace.

Adaptive Reading

Dynamic comprehension calibration (K_user), camera gaze guard, and fatigue scaling. All signals are processed locally — nothing is uploaded.

Document Parsing

Structural extraction for PDFs and EPUBs: running header/footer cleaning, technical syntax dampening for LaTeX math & code, and figure/table focus pauses (VPI). All processing stays on-device.

Focus Sight

A locked reticle on the optimal recognition point (ORP) keeps your fixation anchored during playback. Purely visual — it never captures input and stays out of screen-reader flow.

Punctuation Breathing Room

Adds a short pause at sentence endings (. ! ?) so boundaries get breathing room during playback without breaking the flow. Off keeps the classic cadence exactly as before.

Triple-Mirror ORP Matrix

Add synchronized top and bottom ORP mirrors to the permanent paragraph reader. This does not replace the primary visual.

Top Line Behavior
Bottom Line Behavior

This multi-line visual synchronization feature is a customizable user interface display choice. Settings are saved 100% locally on your device (localStorage).

Smart Pace

Adds a micro-delay on long or rare words so harder tokens get a brief ease while high-WPM flow is preserved. Off keeps the classic cadence exactly as before.

Zen Mode

Auto-hide controls while reading: during playback, non-essential chrome fades away after an idle moment so only the RSVP stream stays on screen. Any pointer or keyboard activity brings the controls right back; pausing restores them fully. Reduced-motion users always keep controls visible.

Visual Auto-Inspect

When the RSVP stream reaches a media node (image, table, math block, diagram), pause smoothly and open a high-contrast inspect overlay with a countdown auto-resume — or bypass media instantly without disturbing word stream timing. Auto-pause is on by default.

Auto-resume countdownHow long the inspect overlay stays open before playback continues automatically (1s–60s). The overlay's Resume Now / Extend Pause / Skip Media controls always remain available.

Audio Read-Along

Hybrid read-listen mode, word-level audio↔visual ORP synchronization, natural-language neural voices, and automatic rate following from the visual WPM. All speech is synthesized locally in the browser — nothing is uploaded.

Mode

Offline & Device Sync

Local-first storage with deterministic conflict resolution (no account required), plus the native e-paper hardware refresh bridge for Android / Onyx Boox webviews. Falls back silently on any other browser.

Settings, lexicon overrides, speed tiers & progress reconcile deterministically (LWW + furthest-position) with no server.
